DSDN101: Brief (Part 1)

As this project is based on revealing our own cultural identity, I will be using inspiration that from major parts of my life. The aspect that I have chosen to focus on are the police symbol. These are important to me as both my Dad and my Grandad worked in the police for a long period of time. I also have personal affiliations with the police as I grew up near the police college and would go there often with Dad and Grandad.

There is a lot of history behind the symbols used by the police, taken from both Maori and British history. As New Zealand has multiple cultures, there are different cultural influences upon the designs. I intend to use a combination of these cultural styles because growing up in New Zealand exposed me to the Maori culture.

The New Zealand Police do so much to keep our country safe by providing a sense of safety through law enforcement. I want to try and investigate this aspect and include it in my pattern someway. 

I believe in the police and respect what they do. As my family is involved in the police, this is a sort of tribute to those who put their life on the line each day to try and make New Zealand a safe place.
