DSDN111: Summary

With this project I have been investigating the principles of design, transition and contrast and how these can change and develop depending on the materials. I began this project using a leaf as inspiration, focusing on how the edges of a leaf are able to curl. I then experimented with using card and trying to create curves out of a series of straight lines portraying transition from straight to curved. I also looked at the way the shadows created contrast between the positive and negative space. With the wire I had to re-approach contrast and transition in a different way as I was looking at "framing space". I used string to help incorporate this idea of contrast of directions and transition between the planes. Mass was different again because we were focusing on creating models with mass and looking at the filled space. I found that with increased mass, the amount of shadow also increased which gave an interesting effect. I also found that transition from positive to negative space was effective as creating shadows which continued to develop the idea of contrast. A wide range of forms can be created from the same principles of design, yet they still create an interesting and complex series as you are able to view both the similarities and differences.
