PROPOSAL

Interaction occurs in many different situations and individuals interact differently to each other. We undergo interaction in our daily lives without even thinking about it. We conform, exploit, react, respond and do it intuitively. We learn these actions from the early stages of life as it is in the human nature, helping us to be successful and productive.

I found the action of responding very interesting because we respond to everything. Every action requires a response and some of them may be simple, but some are complex. I wanted to look at something that all of society interacts with, in one way or another. By investigating this I would be able to look at how people respond to the situation/action in different ways. The topic of interaction that I decided to look at was how people respond to parking signs and rules. All of society interacts with this at some point whether as a driver, a passenger or simply a pedestrian. Walking along the city streets I noticed there was a lot of different parking types and rules associated with them. I also noticed that many individuals weren’t following the rules correctly but not parking directly in the area, parking in loading zones and parking longer than the allocated time. But there were many people that followed the rules as well by parking safely and within the allocated time. There are different interactions with the parking signs and rules, and some of these create dangerous situations for others, because they haven’t responded appropriately.

RESEARCHING INTERACTION

To begin looking at interaction in life, I walked the streets of Wellington, a place I have walked a thousand times before to analyse interactions. I saw things from a different perspective and saw the area of Te Aro in a different light. Everything is an interaction or has an associated interaction and my eyes were opened to so many more.

While out on the streets a range of photos were taken depicting interactions in the world around us. Classifications to the interactions were given under the categories Reacting, Responding, Co-opting, Exploiting, Adapting, Conforming, and Signalling. These were the categories in Jane Fulton Suri’s book on interactions called Thoughtless Acts. Applying the idea of interactions in the area’s we see every day and take for granted made me appreciate the design of my home town.

PLANNING

Sketches and wire frames were an important to aspect to the planning procedure as it gave out the opportunity to brainstorm different and drastically different methods of website options. By applying our own interaction thoughts and ideas to website styles meant we could see our ideas on paper. Wire frames and sketches are really beneficial, even if they are rough copies because everything looks different in our minds. It also gives the opportunity to see how people respond to the ideas at hand. I used a range of different ideas before deciding which style would be the best to help me portray my research on responding and interacting with parking signs and rules.

PHOTOGRAPHY

I went and walked around the Pipitea and Te Aro suburbs in Wellington as these are dense areas where car parks are fitted in wherever possible. There are also many different types of car parks such as 90 degree, 45 degree and parallel car parks. I not only looked at cars, but also scooters and motorbikes because they are a common occurrence in Wellington and still have to abide by parking signs and rules.

EDITING PICTURES

I edited pictures to make them safe for use on the web by making sure there are no identifiable faces or number plates to ensure privacy. I used Adobe Photoshop features to enhance the part of the picture I wanted to focus on. This way the viewer is directed at what I would like them to see, which is how individuals have interacted with parking signs and rules.

WEBSITE

While designing this website I wanted to have a clean and crisp looking site so that the viewers could focus on the information presented regarding the response interaction. To do this I used a large amount of white space and organised the text and images in a purposely aligned way. I also designed the page so that the user was directed around the page and looked at the whole information presented to them. I found this was the most efficient way to present my information clearly.
