Fabricate: Sectioning

I tried the layering of sections method by creating sections of my model in 3ds Max. However, when I went to open up the layers in Illustrator they came out as short lines all over the place. I was unable to create a model from this because there were too many pieces that didnt mean anything and was not the right way to fabricate a model with laser cutting.
