DSDN111: Figure Ground Study

I have always found figure ground relationship very confusing so I thought now would be the perfect time to break it down and learn about it. I have been looking at some images that are more complex examples of figure ground studies, because I can understand the simple ones. The simple ones are easy to understand what is going on because of the obvious light/positive space and the dark/negative space creating the figure ground relationship.

This image is a good example of how using a contrast of black and white defines the foreground and background of the shape within the pattern. This is particularly helpful to help me understand a drawing that has a figure ground relationship but is also three dimensional.
