Project 1: Performing Faces

"Develop a Processing application that uses 2D primitive shapes (circles, squares, lines, curves, etc.) to render a face. The face should have a variety of expressions that is achieved by parametrization of the face geometry. The expressions should convey the personality of your character. You will also select an audio track that your face will perform. The track and the facial expressions of your character must be related, although this relationship is up to you to explore and demonstrate."

All great ideas come to me at the weirdest of times, and never when I normally need them. This idea came to me around 11 o'clock at night while lying in bed and half asleep. Somehow I thought of using the idea of LSD and the resulting high to create a performing face. The physical changes used within the video are base on the cliche changes that LSD causes, both physically and mentally. This includes pupil dilation, visual distortion and hallucinations.

To accompany the visual effects, I have used the song Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds which was originally thought to be based on LSD, but according to John Lennon isn't. This song now has a stigma attached to it of the 60s and the acid fill trips of the time.

This project was created using Processing and works on a range of high and low sounds to create the facial movements. Although this is only a video, the application can be accompanied with any music and reacts to the high and low tones of the particular song.

Created using Processing and After Effects, for educational purposes.

A project for Victoria University of Wellington's, School of Design.

Music - Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds by The Beatles.
